Actually the gay bars in Austin are on most only 4th St. Oil Can Harry's and Boyz Cellar are right next to each other, with Rainbow Cattle Company a block away on 5th and The Forum nearby on Congress. There are also several other gay bars and clubs scattered around. Over on 6th St. between the interstate and Congress Ave. are several blocks of mostly straight bars of all types. Austin is not a giant city so there isn't a big selection of gay bars and businesses, and no actual "gay ghetto" prefer larger cities possess. But it's still probably the most liberal of Texas cities and offers a lot. Granted Texas is a big change from Boston or San Francisco but it's really not a bad place just different in a lot of ways from what you're probably used to. But give it a chance and you'll find that the people are some of the nicest you'll locate anywhere, there's tons to do (although I think Houston offers more), and the cost of living is cheaper than many other parts of the country.

Hurry, the party’s gotta end…sometime. Really. With Fourth Street being bulldozed to create way for luxury apartments, the LGBTQIA+ community has been in limbo in recent years as to when the last hurrah will be. Clearly, the gang’s been living each festivity appreciate it’s their last, if those heaving downtown parties are anything to proceed by. Mainstays enjoy Oilcan Harry’s, Rain on 4th, and the Coconut Club, are spilling in glitter, boys, and eyelashes like never before, and you know these queens will keep going till the cranes come in. (The bars keep having ‘farewell parties’, but they’re like Cher tours and they keep coming back.)
The good news is that relocation is in the works, so they needn’t head to the breweries yet (phew). Let’s worry about Google Maps later. Austin’s still dancing, and you’ll uncover a small but mighty selection of gay bars to quench whatever y’all are thirsting for. Sister bar to Coconut Club, Cuatro Gato serves up Latin sounds along with a bevvy of beer, mezcal, wine and cocktails from South of the border. "Coffee shop by day, perreo by night," keep an eye on their Instagram for themed nights, drag shows and other adj events.
