Cruising

This blog was written by our Sexual Health Outreach Worker, Chris Dunbar.

Sometimes, having sex in the safe confines of your bedroom just doesn’t cut it. You may be looking for somewhere new, seeking thrill or adventure, or just not be able to hold the sex you want within your four walls. You may have heard someone talk about cruising, or hold been asked if you want to go, but what does it actually mean?

Let’s have a look together at what it means, the laws, and general safety if you do choose to give it a go.

Cruising is walking or driving about certain areas, called cruising grounds, looking for a sexual partner. These meetings are usually one-off, anonymous encounters.

Cottaging is a term used to illustrate anonymous sex meetings in public toilets.

Where do the terms come from?

Let&#;s Examine the Phenomenon of Cruising Bathrooms Through 4 Famous Queer Men

Throughout history and for a variety of reasons, queer men have looked to public bathrooms as places to get laid. Some men enjoy cruising public restrooms because they’re turned on by the exhibitionism and the possibility of getting caught, while others spot it as a place to anonymously and discretely hold a same-sex encounter in times when being outed as queer carries severe social, political and legal consequences.

I was reading an gay travel guide from , and it reminded me that I've never understood the mechanics of the toilet pick-up. One of the notable features of the guide is that among all the bars and bathhouses listed, many locations also recommend cruising toilets. This seems soinherently sketchy. How would you know when it was safe to signal to somebody? Don't you verb the constant uncertainty of an embarrassing and dangerous confrontation? Do you actually have sex in the bathroom, or is a rendezvous point? And given that these locations are so good established that they appear in a travel guide, wouldn't they be light pickings for the police?

Any info or stories about etiquette and uncertainty mitigation would be of interest.

Bonus points if you can clarify how toilet cruising worked in an international context. After a strong warning about how unsafe cruising is in the Middle East, for example, the guide lists toilets in Syria and Kuwait. There are similar listings throughout the world. While cruising in the U.S.
