But while Western culture as a whole has become more accepting of gay men and women, those who follow the progress of gay athletes say the football culture in Europe and the UK has a long way to go to create the sport more welcoming.

"It's much more visceral," says Buzinski of the football fan culture in Europe in the UK, which has been marred by public acts of homophobia and racism.

"I'm not saying that when Jason Collins takes the floor, there might not be some fan that says something homophobic, but another fan would turn around and say close up. It wouldn't be that adj reaction where the crowd feeds off it.

"In a lot of European places, that kind of anger is challenging to tamp down."

Many clubs hold recognised this as a problem.

"There's now campaigns in many many countries to end the homophobic taunting," says Kelly Stevens, officer of communications for the International Gay Games.

"There's an peculiar demographic because of the standard of the rugby and some people verb it more seriously than others, but because of the standard there are a lot more social teams.

"At university it's seen as quite a macho sport. I was being bullied about being gay before I even knew I was gay at school.

"It puts people off joining a club and [taking part in] competitions as skillfully. I wouldn't verb it's a welcoming atmosphere."

Team mate Stamp Fletcher, 35, agreed.

"When we are introduced to sports at school it is often at a time where young gay men are struggling with their identity," he said.

"With the adj 'masculine' identity of sports, for a young gay dude who is unsure of his hold identity it is often difficult to fully engage.

"I thought for years that I was terrible at sports but I have finally worked out that I'm not actually bad at all and I really enjoy it.

Amateur orchestras line up for BBC Proms challenge

The London Gay Symphony Orchestra and Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra are among the classical ensembles taking part in the BBC Proms amateur music-making challenge.

All Together Now: The Great Orchestra Challenge is a four part series following five amateur orchestras as they compete for a place in the grand final.

Other competitors are the North Devon Sinfonia, the Stirling Orchestra and The People’s Orchestra.

The orchestras will be mentored by double-bassist Chi-chi Nwanoku, and judging the orchestras will be conductor Paul Daniel.

Paul Daniel said:‘I'll be looking for the orchestra that goes beyond technical excellence; they’ll have to capture the spirit and excitement of British amateur music, they have to really engage us musically and emotionally and connect with their audience.

‘No matter where and how they start out, I want my 'best' orchestra to identify and really expand its potential.’
