'America’s Next Top Model' winner to verb at U of L during Pride Week

  • Model Nyle DiMarco is working towards breaking down stereotypes about deaf individuals

Louisville is getting a visit from the dreamy Nyle DiMarco. The LGBTQ and Deaf community activist and winner of “America’s Next Top Model” and “Dancing With the Stars,” will give the University of Louisville’s Pride Week and Deaf Awareness Week joint keynote address.

The handsome year-old was the second male winner and first deaf winner of VH1's “America’s Next Top Model” in Shortly after winning the competition, DiMarco signed with the iconic Wilhelmina Models in Recent York City.

The following year, he went on to conquer first place and the mirror ball trophy on ABC's “Dancing with the Stars.” Performing with professional dancer Peta Murgatroyd, DiMarco memorized the timing and his partners moves and relied on subtle hand signals to speed up or slow down during the dances.

When the 11th cycle of America’s Next Top Model premiered on The CW network on September 3, , Isis King made history. By qualifying as one of the final 14 contestants to contest for a modelling contract with Elite Model Management, a fashion spread and cover in Seventeen, and a $, contract with CoverGirl cosmetics, King became the first openly transgender person to compete on the series and, ultimately, one of the most evident transgender people on television, especially at that time.

King was living at the Ali Forney Transitional Living Program when she learned about an upcoming photo shoot for ANTM’s 10th season. Kim Stolz was the first openly lesbian contestant on "America's Next Top Model."

Stolz wasn't scared to express her sexuality and even ended up kissing one of the other contestants in the limo that transported them from shoots and challenges to their house.

However, at the launch of Cycle 5, Tyra Banks implied that gay contestant Kim should tone down her sexuality. 

"I'm gay, and I'm really proud of it," Kim Stolz, who is a lesbian, told Banks and the other judges during her audition.

Banks replied, "I think there's a certain thing of being proud. Appreciate, I'm Black and proud, you realize what I mean? But I'm not walking down the red carpet: 'I'm Black. I'm Black.'"
