Federer and Murray not worried over gay players

ROME: Roger Federer   and Andy Murray insisted yesterday that any player who came out as gay would not face discrimination on the tour.

US basketball star Jason Collins recently revealed he was gay, becoming the first active professional player in the US to declare his homosexuality.

Federer believes any such revelation in men’s tennis would not cause problems.

“I don’t think it’s a problem to be honest. We are relaxed and don’t play team sport and mix a lot, not with the girls, but with the guys and we’re very open,” said the time Grand Slam title winner.

“What would happen in this event? I don’t know. I don’t know if there is anyone.”

World number three Murray said that there are probably some gay men on the professional tour.

But the Scot said that if a fellow competitor decided to go public, he would find sympathy.

“I would aspire there are no issues on the tour,” said the US Open and Olympic champion.

Federer: No problem for gay tennis players

Roger Federer is in Rome for the Italian Open. The Swiss maestro, along with Andy Murray, were asked about the possibility of gay tennis players and the stance from players and the sport overall. Both believe there would be no problem.

&#;I don&#;t think it would be a problem,&#; Federer said. &#;We&#;re very relaxed. We don&#;t play a team sport and see each other all the moment. &#; We&#;re very open. So whatever happens, happens. I don&#;t know if there are any (gay players). So far from what I&#;ve heard, no. But that could change, possibly because of the case in the NBA.&#;

We are still waiting for a gay male tennis player to come out during his playing career.

But at least we&#;re talking about it.

In , retired pro Brian Vahaly became the highest-ranking male pro tennis player to come ever out publicly &#; 10 years after his retirement from the ATP tour.

I wrote yesterday about Brian being a part of Open Playbook: Being Queer & Out in Pro Tennis which will take place the evening of Aug. 23 in Adj York City.

Wimbledon finalist Kevin Anderson plugged the event on Twitter writing in part: &#;Words that come to mind when I ponder about people who are Out: courageous, strong, progressive, fearless and leaders.&#;

World number 2 Roger Federer, defeated by Anderson in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, was asked about Anderson&#;s very public support of gay people and if the ATP tour is a safe place for a player to come out.
