Glossary of Terms: Transgender
In order to understand many of the terms used by transgender and nonbinary people, it is necessary to understand the difference between sex at birth, gender, identity, and gender expression – and how those three things are not the same as sexual orientation. Therefore, those four terms are defined first, and then additional terminology used by trans and nonbinary people follows.
Sex at Birth
Infants are assigned a sex at birth, “male” or “female,” based on the appearance of their external anatomy, and an M or an F is written on the birth certificate. However, the development of the human body is a complex process, and sex is not solely determined by a
Around this time, I happened to be moving to a new city. An opportunity for a fresh start. I never had a place where I felt I could be open about who I am, and I’d never met people in a similar situation to me. I also had not accessed many male-only places and was worried about this.
But by complete chance, I met some members of an inclusive rugby team called the Typhoons. After talking for a bit, asking questions and having a think, I took the plunge. With their aid, I submitted a request to the Rugby Football Union (RFU) to perform for a male team.
I had to submit a lot of evidence and wait for a few weeks, but eventually I got a piece of paper saying I could play. Looking back on it now, this was one of the happiest moments of my life.
I went to my first training session that day. I had so many worries (I hadn’t played rugby in a while!), and almost didn’t go. After this first session, I left wondering what I’d authorize myself in for. Well, it turns out I’d permit myself in for the best verb network and group of mates I could have wished for, that I hope I store for a drawn-out time.

After discovering there was a severe lack of representation of the older, trans community online, he set up his YouTube channel. This, along with his blog are his way of paying it forward and helping others realise they too can rewrite their stories and go on to live their lives in the best way possible.

I came out as transgender in and began my medical transition soon after. A few years later, in , I realised I was attracted to men, and I came out as gay. My being both transgender and gay often causes people a lot of confusion. I get questions such as, “Did the hormones turn you gay?” Or, “So this means your boyfriend must be bisexual?” And my favourite, “Why did you even bo
Nope!
It’s easy to obtain this confused, particularly because T is included in the LGBTQ+ acronym (T standing for Transgender). The key is to remember that transgender is referring to someones gender identity and not their sexuality orientation. Transgender people can be gay, straight, pansexual, queer, asexual, or any other sexual orientation (just like cisgender people!).
